Siding estimate, what to look for
The first thing you want before even considering a siding estimate are estimates from 2 other contractors. This will allow you to compare the pros and cons of each while not becoming overwhelmed by an excessive number of quotes. If possible try and get all 3 of the contractors to base their estimates on the same criteria, for instance the material quality, quantity and the amount of work that will be carried out. Doing so will make your job of comparing the estimates far easier to carry out and show up obvious differences in pricing.
As you look through your siding estimates make sure there are no hidden costs and that all required information is adequately covered. You should see detailed information on the required materials, work to be carried out, cleanup of the job and the fee for manual labour. If you are unsure about any information in your siding estimate don’t be afraid to request an explanation from the siding company. If they are truly professionals they will be more than happy to explain how they developed and broke down your estimate. If they are not happy to do this then you are probably better off looking elsewhere.
Warning signs in your siding estimate
- Estimates that do not break down the cost of each item
- Unusually low fees for manual labor, this can indicate that the company is not fully licensed or insured
- Incorrect calculations and totals
- Estimates that require more than 20% of the total paid upfront
If you find that none of your three siding estimates are satisfactory, don’t be afraid to throw them away and go looking for more companies, good leg work at this point will save you money and headaches down the road.
A final tip, even if you don’t have any real questions to ask about the estimates, make up a few and ask each company. This will give you a good idea of their responsiveness and what it will be like having them work on your house.
